Nothing fancy, nothing delicate at all, should put your mind at ease. When they're calibrated they're pretty much just tightening up the slop from wear over time. The reason you calibrate them is that the teeth wear and the coefficient of friction changes. The ratchet skips over to the next tooth and that's why you hear it click. All the mechanism is is a big spring with an adjuster to get the tension right and a set of ratchet teeth that slip when torque overcomes friction. You don't have to baby them, mine just gets put in my drawer with my ratchets and just as I don't hit stuff with my ratchets or drop them on the floor, I don't do it with my torque wrenches either.
